Methods here are lengthening techniques, kept separate from the devices used with them and from providers' own procedure names. Listings are provider-reported and publicly sourced, and informational only — LimbAtlas does not recommend a technique or device, and suitability depends on an individual clinical assessment. Confirm current details directly with a provider. Diagrams are simplified illustrations, not to scale and not of any specific device.

How it works

AAOS describes the bone being cut and an expandable metal rod being implanted in the bone, which then lengthens gradually.

Named systems are adjusted from outside the body in different ways. Globus Medical describes PRECICE as lengthened through magnets in the device and an External Remote Controller; Orthofix describes FITBONE as a motorized system with an implanted receiver and an external control set.

Typical components

  • An intramedullary lengthening nail
  • For remotely adjusted nails, an external controller used to activate each lengthening session

Devices providers name with it

Device types: Intramedullary lengthening nail.

A device is not a technique: the same frame or nail can be part of different techniques. Listed devices are ones providers name on LimbAtlas, not a complete market list.

Points to discuss with a treating team

  • Ask which nail system is proposed for each bone, and why.
  • Ask how the team checks whether a nail fits the bone, and what happens if lengthening needs to be adjusted.

Rehabilitation

AAOS describes regular follow-up visits and extensive rehabilitation, including physical therapy and home exercise, for both internal and external lengthening.
